Suez Canal

Live vessel traffic through the Suez Canal: how many ships are in the lane now, what kind they are, and a timelapse of the last few hours.

The Suez Canal runs across Egypt from Port Said on the Mediterranean to the city of Suez on the Red Sea, and it is what lets a ship between Europe and Asia avoid the long way round southern Africa. It has no locks: the two seas sit at close enough to the same level that the canal is a sea level channel, so a transit is a slow convoy rather than a series of lifts. A parallel channel opened along part of the route in 2015, which lets convoys pass each other where before they had to wait.
