Panama Canal
Live vessel traffic through the Panama Canal: how many ships are in the lane now, what kind they are, and a timelapse of the last few hours.
The Panama Canal crosses the isthmus between the Caribbean and the Pacific, sparing ships the passage around the southern tip of South America. Unlike Suez it is a canal of locks: a ship is lifted to Gatun Lake, carried across it and lowered again on the far side, which is why a transit takes the better part of a day. A larger set of locks opened alongside the original ones in 2016, raising the size of ship the canal can take.
