Strait of Messina
Live vessel traffic through the Strait of Messina: how many ships are in the lane now, what kind they are, and a timelapse of the last few hours.
The Strait of Messina separates Sicily from the toe of the Italian mainland, and at its narrowest it is a little over one and a half nautical miles across. Tidal streams run hard through it and turn every six hours, which is the origin of the whirlpool Homer called Charybdis. Ferries and railway barges cross between Messina and Villa San Giovanni all day, directly across the ships running north and south.
