Cook Strait
Live vessel traffic through the Cook Strait: how many ships are in the lane now, what kind they are, and a timelapse of the last few hours.
Cook Strait separates the North and South islands of New Zealand, and at its narrowest it is about thirteen nautical miles across, between Cape Terawhiti and the entrance to Tory Channel. The ferries between Wellington and Picton cross it several times a day, and they are the land route between the two islands for freight as much as for passengers. It is open to the Southern Ocean swell at both ends and has a reputation among the roughest crossings of its length anywhere.
